Bath time for Bullsbrook’s furry friends

It was love at first sight when Kim Mogensen and her husband Reg drove through Bullsbrook for the first time, fresh from Queensland. Twelve years and thousands of dog-washes later, the couple still love their Bullsbrook lifestyle.

Kim’s business, Moggy’s Doggys, is a big part of the picture, enabling Kim to combine her love of driving and animals.

“I have so many funny moments each day, from dogs trying to hide because they don’t want a bath, to those that are so chilled in the tub they lay on their back with their paws in the air and have a big smile on their face while they enjoy their pamper session,” Kim says.

“Then there are the dogs that try to eat the bubbles and end up with a Santa beard and the thieves who steal my homemade treats when I’m not looking.”

Moggy’s Doggy’s started as a weekend hobby business to raise money for rescue animals when the Mogensens were living in Townsville.

“When we moved to WA 12 years ago we passed through the Bullsbrook area and I remember saying I hoped we would have the opportunity to live here one day,” Kim says.

The family’s dream came true in 2016 and the following year they introduced Bullsbrook locals to Moggy’s Doggy’s, which quickly grew into a family-run small business operating six days a week.

“Without my awesome Moggy’s Doggys family in and around Bullsbrook, I wouldn’t be doing what I absolutely love,” Kim says.

Bullsbrook is certainly a great place to own a dog. With its many trails and parks, there’s no shortage of options when taking your four-legged friend out for a walk.

In 2021 alone, Kim notched up more than 2,000, dog washes, sprucing up local pet pooches of all shapes and sizes, from mountainous Bullmastiffs and Saint Bernards, to tiny Chihuahuas and Tenterfield Terriers.

And it’s not just Bullsbrook’s canine companions who get the doggy day spa treatment. Kim has washed kangaroos, goats, sheep, horses, pigs, guinea pigs and rabbits.

Fostering animals through SAFE Perth – Saving Animals from Euthanasia has also become a big part of life for Kim and Reg, and daughters Paige and Gemma.

The family currently share their property with two dogs, two cats, several sheep, countless chickens and a horse named Willow. Rabbits, guinea pigs, puppies and kittens have also stayed with the Mogensens over the years.

“Knowing you are a stepping-stone from one home to their forever home is so rewarding,” Kim says. “Some stay for a week, others for a few months, and some never leave because they’ve decided to call our family theirs.”

Today, the Mogensens live in Lower Chittering, just a stone’s throw from the centre of Bullsbrook.

“The girls have enjoyed their time learning at Bullsbrook College and we love exploring the variety of local landscapes,” Kim says.

“The history is interesting to delve into, the Bullsbrook Bull Trail makes for a fun drive, we have some truly scrumptious takeaway joints and restaurants, and the Swan Valley is just 20 minutes away. We’ve loved watching Bullsbrook grow in recent years and have met some life-long friends here.”
