Design Trend - Holiday at Home

Design Trend - Holiday at Home
30 August 2022

Never before have we felt quite such a strong need to unwind, de-stress and relax, so it’s not surprising home designers have been taking inspiration from home and abroad for the fourth and final design trend in our series.

But today there’s a new twist on the holiday-at-home vibes.

We’re moving away from that super-sleek hotel styling and embracing rustic European villas, country hideaways and peaceful sanctuaries that restore both body and soul.

Here are some ideas to help you design your own relaxing retreat, whether you’re taking inspiration from far-flung destinations or looking to our spectacular local landscape for those restorative qualities.

Go organic

Channel your favourite winter hideaway with natural materials such as timber, terracotta and stone, a fireplace for cosy winter days, luxurious textures such as super-soft wool, and a colour palette to nurture and calm.

Take the living outdoors

Few things say summer holidays quite like a fabulous indoor / outdoor room, where you can dine, relax and catch up with family and friends, or simply set up the hammock for a siesta after lunch in the Swan Valley.

Spa day at home

Create space for a little me-time and pampering with a fabulous ensuite bathroom complete with freestanding bath looking out to a private courtyard or garden to capture the essence of your favourite Balinese retreat.

Light the fire

No need to escape to the South West when your home feels like your own private winter hideaway. A statement fireplace is one of the hallmarks of today’s retreat-inspired styling, whether you opt for something chic and modern, or timeless and traditional. A firepit keeps guests toasty outdoors, inviting conversation under the stars.

Space to chill

Designing a home where you have space to enjoy hobbies and interests can help you create your own mini-break. Taking time to step away from everyday stresses has never been more important for our mental health, and new homes are a reflection of this, from multi-purpose rooms ideal for yoga, craft and movies, to reading nooks, spacious kitchens for passionate home cooks and big back yards for the keen gardeners.
