James Worsley has always known the sporting spirit runs strong through the close-knit Bullsbrook community.

But when it came to finding sports for his energetic two-year-old son Mason to enrol in, he discovered most established clubs and groups catered to older kids and adults.

“So I approached the Bullsbrook Saints Football Club with the idea of establishing a junior team so that Mason would have something to grow into,” said James.

“Next thing I knew we had received approval to start Bullsbrook’s very first Auskick program and I had been given the job of inaugural coordinator.”

While Auskick getting behind his initiative was a surprise, so was the number of parents who started contacting James to sign up their budding young footballers.

“I thought we would get a few takers, but it just goes to show you how many young families are now calling Kingsford at Bullsbrook home and wanting their kids to benefit from sport and community connection.”

Like the AFL season, Bullsbrook Auskick runs from March to September, with Picket Park Oval providing the local equivalent to the MCG!

Thirty eager four to eight-year-olds train for an hour each Sunday building up their basic footy skills and knowledge of the game.

Auskick also helps the kids develop friendships, hone their social and physical skills, and build their confidence.

With the high level of interest, James hopes Auskick will act as the catalyst to establish the Junior Bullsbrook Football Club.

“In an ideal scenario we would have a separate Junior team operating alongside the already existing Senior Bullsbrook Football Club with both under the same club banner,” he said.

“Getting volunteers on board to help with things like fundraising and running the canteen plays an important part in the success of the program.

“It’s been amazing to see the locals rallying around us to help out and it’s made the training sessions really community focussed.”
